A woman came home from work to find her husband beaten to death in a pool of blood in their west London flat.

The unnamed man, believed to be 56, was found lying in the living room of the couple’s flat beside a broken table leg in Acton on Monday night.

Today neighbours described the moment when his wife banged desperately on their door pleading for help after arriving home to the horrific scene.

Halima Abdirahman, 20, said: “She came running into our house, crying and screaming that she needed help. She just said, ‘help me, help me, something has happened to my husband’. She was very upset.

“I went over. I saw blood in the hallway and I could see his feet. He was in the living room. There was blood on his face. We called the police.”

Safiya Mohamed, 39, who lives with Miss Abdirahman, added: “He was in a pool of blood. There was a broken table leg near his body and his face was smashed up.

"There was no one in the house with him. We were all quite frightened, he was lying face up.”

The dead man's wife, who is believed to be from Ghana but has lived in Nigeria, had returned home from work in a nearby nursing home when she found her husband.

Neighbours in Grahame Tower, in Hanbury Road said the couple did not have any children, although he is believed to have children from a previous relationship in Ghana.

They couple, described as “quiet and polite”, moved into the property just over a year ago.

Miss Mohamed added: “When they moved in she came over to say hello, they were very quiet people, and really we would just say hello politely if we saw them.”

She said that a younger man had been staying with the couple recently but that she did not know who he was. She added that the man and the man had been seen together on the day he died.

His wife remained at her neighbour’s house until 3am on Tuesday morning when she was taken to the police station.

Miss Mohammed added: “She was speechless. She could speak English, because we spoke in English before this happened, but the police needed to get an interpreter for her because no words were coming out.”

The dead man, who is also from Ghana, was not believed to have been employed.

A police spokesman said: “Police were called at approximately 10.25pm on Monday, 26 November, to reports of a man found collapsed and injured inside an address in Hanbury Road, Acton.

“Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and a 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. He had suffered head injuries”.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody at a west London Police station.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place today at Uxbridge Mortuary.
