A self-proclaimed "white rights advocate" has been charged with inciting racial hatred after announcing plans to "destroy" Israeli flags and burn Jewish holy books.

Joshua Bonehill, 22, made a series of posts on his blog about an anti-Jewish rally which is due to take place in north London next Saturday, July 4.

In the online postings, he encouraged people to destroy Israeli flags by hand at the demonstration in Golders Green, which has one of the capital’s largest Jewish communities.

He also said a "private ceremony" would take place at a secret location just before the rally, where extremists would set fire to Jewish holy texts.

Bonehill, of Yeovil in Somerset, was today charged with inciting racial hatred contrary to the Public Order Act 1986.

He was arrested on Thursday by officers from the Met and the Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

He is being held in custody and will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service public order branch continue to work with Barnet borough officers and their partners ahead of a proposed demonstration in the Golders Green area on 4 July.

"Officers continue to assess all information and intelligence available in relation to the proposed demonstration and speak with the organisers to ensure an appropriate policing response is in place.

"We are aware of concerns in the local community about the negative impact this proposed demonstration may have on them.

"We are working with residents to ensure that people can exercise their rights in a way that is lawful, while minimising this impact."

Police have previously made clear they have no power to block the protest if it remains a static rally.

Campaign groups have banded together to form the initiative Golders Green Together in response to the protest plans, with the aim of preventing the event from dividing the area.
