A memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives in two world wars has been destroyed by a car in south-east London.

The Shortlands War Memorial in Beckenham was wiped out in the smash at about 10.20am.

A car appears to have somehow knocked the memorial off its plinth, after two vehicles crashed.

It has smashed into pieces after hitting the ground.

Police are at the scene of the crash in Kingswood Road, at the junction with Church Road.

A woman has been injured. Her condition was not believed to life-threatening.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.

No arrests have been made.
