A bogus barber stole a £3,500 gold necklace from a man while shaving him.

The waistcoated crook, who managed to convince the customer he worked at the barber's while the owner was out of the shop, covered the man's face with towels and started the procedure - during which he managed to unclasp and pocket the necklace.

Once he had stolen the chain, he left the man's neck half-shaven and dashed out the front door. Only then did his victim discover anything amiss.

The sleight-of-hand thief struck on June 5 at about 3pm in Woodford Avenue, Snaresbrook.

Police this week released two images showing a man they believe has information about him.

They described the fake barber as "approximately 40, 6'0", and wearing a black hat, dark waistcoat, dark shirt and dark trousers" with a brown beard and green eyes.

A Met spokeswoman added: "The necklace is a heavy 22-carat gold chain with cross and booklet pendant and a leaf motif, valued at £3,500."

Anyone with information about the theft, or anyone who can identify the man in the pictures, is asked to contact police in Redbridge on 101 quoting reference 4410171/15. You can also call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
