Two deputies have been shot and killed inside a Chinese restaurant in a suspected ambush in Florida, according to reports.

Residents were warned to stay away from Trenton area of the state while police investigated following the shooting on Thursday.

The gunman opened fire on the two officers while they were eating in the restaurant at about 3pm, US media reported.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi released a statement confirming the deaths of the two Gilchrist County deputies.

The sheriff's office has not released any further details about how the deputies were killed.

But officers said that no suspects are at large.

Trenton is in northern Florida, about 35 miles west of Gainesville.
