Poker's “Tiger Woods” is taking Britain’s oldest gambling club to court over what he claims are unpaid winnings of nearly £8 million.

Phil Ivey, pictured, who has triumphed at nine World Series of Poker Championships, is suing Crockfords casino in Mayfair for allegedly withholding the prize money acquired playing Punto Banco last August. Crockfords has been operating since 1828.

Ivey, 36, who filed a writ at the High Court, said he was “deeply saddened” by the situation. He added: “I was given a receipt for my winnings, but Crockfords subsequently withheld payment.”

A spokesman for Genting, the company which owns the casino, said: “We are able to confirm that our position, which is supported by strong legal advice, has been made very clear to Mr Ivey’s solicitors.”
