The sister of a mentally ill man who died in police custody said today she welcomed the arrests of two serving and one retired Met police officers in connection with evidence given at his inquest.

Musician Sean Rigg died from a cardiac arrest at Brixton police station in August 2008.

Speaking at her home in Mitcham, Marcia Rigg-Samuel said: “Myself and my family are pleased with this development.

“We just now hope that it will help in our battle for justice for Sean.”

The two serving officers were arrested on suspicion of perjury and perverting the course of justice and the retired officer on suspicion of perverting the course of justice during the inquest into Mr Rigg’s death last year.

The inquest jury found police officers used “unsuitable” force after arresting the 40-year-old schizophrenic for attacking passers-by and police in Balham.

The three were questioned and released on bail until May.
