Three women health care assistants have been charged with abusing elderly patients at Whipps Cross Hospital.

Scotland Yard said they all faced charges of neglect or ill-treatment of patients, while one was also charged with assault and fraud.

Police launched an inquiry after allegations were made through the hospital trust’s whistleblowing system this year.

The claims centred on a specialist geriatric ward at the hospital in Leytonstone. The women had already been suspended and the ward closed to new admissions.

Patients were alleged to have suffered “physical and verbal abuse”, Barts Health NHS Trust said in July.

Sharmilla Gunda, 35, of Ilford, is charged with one count of neglect and one count of fraud; Annette Jackson, 32, of Hounslow, faces four counts of neglect and Akousa Sakyiwaa, 37, of Leytonstone, is charged with seven counts of neglect and one of common assault.

Barts Health Trust said: “The welfare of our patients is our highest priority at all times and we have

co-operated fully and proactively with the police investigation.

“The charges are now a matter for the courts and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further.”
