Three people have been arrested over the attempted murder of an Indian general in central London.

A 33-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman were detained in Wolverhampton, and another man in his 30s was held after the car he was travelling in was stopped in West Bromwich.

The arrests come after a gang of four people attacked Lieutenant General Kuldeep Singh Brar in Old Quebec Street near Marble Arch.

They slashed the 78-year-old's neck as he was walking along with his wife around 10.40pm on Sunday, and ran off towards Oxford Street.

Detectives particularly want to speak to passers-by who stopped to help the victim, who was visiting London, and anyone else who saw what happened.

The attackers were all Asian, were wearing dark clothes and had long beards. One of them was younger and slimmer than the other three.

Officers said they were keeping an open mind as to the motive for the attack.

Mr Brar was involved in a military operation against Sikh militants in Armritsar in 1984 that left an estimated 1,000 people dead.
