Detectives were today quizzing a third man over the death of an Italian whose body was found tied to a supermarket trolley in Regent's Canal.

Emergency services staff pulled the partially decomposed body of Sebastiano Magnanini from the canal on September 24.

Two people have since been charged and police tonight said they had arrested a 41-year-old on suspicion of murder.

He was arrested yesterday and remains in custody at a central London police station, a Met Police spokesman said.

Police have previously charged Paul Williams, 61, of no fixed abode with preventing lawful burial.

He is being held on remand until his next appearance at Blackfriars Crown Court on Tuesday.

Daniel Hastie, 22, of no fixed abode faces a charge of fraud by false representation.

He is currently bailed to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court in a week's time.

Mr Magnanini was a 46-year-old carpenter, who lived in south London.

He had been jailed in the 1990s after stealing an 18th century painting worth about £1 million, by Italian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, from a church in Venice.
