A US singer who appeared on the Mexican version of The Voice has died after he was shot in an ambush while celebrating his birthday with friends.

Alejandro “Jano” Fuentes, who took part in the 2011 season of the show, was shot three times in the head outside a school in Chicago on Thursday.

Medics confirmed his death on Saturday.

The attack on the 45-year-old came less than a week after the killing in Orlando of US Voice star Christina Grimmie, who was shot dead on June 10 as she signed autographs.

Reports said Mr Fuentes had got into his car with friends when an armed man suddenly ordered him from the vehicle and shot him.

Police said they have no suspects in the attack. Local media said officers were investigating robbery or carjacking as lines of enquiry.
