A sub-machine gun with live ammunition has been seized by police during drug raids in south-east London.

Four men were arrested as police swooped on addresses in Penge last night, Scotland Yard said.

Officers also recovered a silencer for the Scorpion weapon, along with cannabis, bank cards which are believed to have been stolen, and around £4,000 in cash.

Two 28-year-old men were arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis and money laundering. Two other men, aged 27 and 66, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

Inspector Steve Boswell, of Lambeth Police, said: "This is an excellent piece of work carried out by our local neighbourhood officers who have responded to local concerns surrounding drug use and supply in the area.

"The result is that an extremely dangerous firearm has been taken off the streets of London today."
