An off-duty doctor battled at the roadside to save a man who attempted to drive himself to hospital following a vicious knife attack.

The victim, a black male in his twenties, drove less than 50 yards before collapsing at the wheel, soaked in blood.

Witnesses said the man had been stabbed five times in an argument with two other men in Oldfield Road, off busy Stoke Newington Church Street in east London, at 11.30am yesterday. He drove away in his Seat hatchback but veered onto the pavement, stopping inches from the doorstep of a family home around the corner in Marton Road.

A worker at Fat Cat Café which overlooks the scene, said: “A lady in here was a doctor and went out and tried to help. He was still slumped behind the wheel.

“She gave him medical assistance for a couple of minutes but the police and paramedics were there very quickly to take over. The doctor said he had been stabbed about five times.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said detectives were keeping an “open mind” about the incident.

One said: “It happened right opposite us and then the victim collapsed near the Fat Cat Café. I didn’t see it, but there is a huge pool of blood on the pavement.”

Another said: “There were a lot of people standing around the car and police and paramedics were everywhere.

“The police were leaning into the car but it all looked very panicked. It looked like they were frantically trying to put pressure on his wounds.

“Then they hauled him out of the car and worked on him while he was on the floor, trying to resuscitate him for about 15 minutes.”

The victim was taken to an east London hospital where he was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “At this early stage it is believed that the victim was stabbed in nearby Oldfield Road but got in his car and left the scene, pulling over in Marton Road where he was initially treated before going to hospital.

“Prior to being stabbed it is believed the victim was talking to two men in Oldfield Road.

“Whilst officers believe they know who the victim is they await formal identification. A post mortem examination with be scheduled in due course.”

He added: “Officers are keen to hear from anyone in or around the area that saw the victim talking to the two men in Oldfield Road.

“They are also keen to hear from anyone who was in or around the Oldfield Road or Marton Road area that may have seen or heard anything that may assist the investigation.”
