Armed police stormed a block of flats after terrified residents reported gunfire in south London.

Panicked onlookers called police after hearing shots and the sound of cars crashing in Stockwell on Saturday night.

Residents reported hearing screams in the clash at flats in Aytoun Road just after 11pm.

A police helicopter was scrambled and officers stormed the flats where they found evidence of shots fired, but no injured victims.

Minutes later, police were called to a separate shooting in Leys Court, Brixton Road where evidence of gunfire but no injured people were found.

Lois Roberts, a 25-year-old who lives in the Aytoun Road estate near Brixton Road, heard the “terrifying” ordeal play out in a flat opposite hers.

“I was just sat at my desk and I heard five loud bangs which I first assumed was a car backfiring, but then I thought ‘no that’s something more’. I've never heard a bang like that before,” she said.

“I was too scared to look outside the window but my flatmate’s boyfriend looked and said he saw two men running across the estate.

“About 20 minutes later we heard this man screaming. It was terrifying. He was shouting things like ‘You are f****** dead. I’m going to f****** kill you you’.

“Then we heard what sounded like a car driving repeatedly into something and then reversing over something which made a crunching noise. It was horrific.

“My flatmate called the police and 10 armed officers broke into one of the flats and we saw three people being escorted out.

"The next day I saw two cars smashed up outside the flat.”

Forensic officers were dispatched to the scene police are investigating whether a potential victim has “self-presented” at hospital with gunshot wounds.

Ms Roberts, a jewellery designer originally from Wales, has only been living in London for six months and said the incident had made her feel unsafe living where she does.

“Nothing like this happens where I am from. It was just a bit scary really,” she said.

“There is so much stuff that goes on, we hear dogs and people screaming and I have seen a drugs raid before.”

A police spokesman confirmed that crime scenes were still in place but no arrests have been made.

He said: "Police were called at 11:19pm on Saturday, 3 September, to reports of gunshots heard in the vicinity of Aytoun Road, SW9.

"Local officers and firearms officers attended and found evidence of a discharge of a firearm at a block of flats in Aytoun Road.

"At 11.33pm police received further calls to shots heard in Leys Court, Brixton Road. Officers on scene at Aytoun Road attended the second location and found evidence of a discharge of a firearm.

"Officers did not find anyone injured at either location and there have been no reports of injured persons. Enquiries are ongoing to establish if anyone has self-presented at local hospitals with injuries consistent with being shot.

"Crime scenes are currently in place at both locations as enquiries continue.
