Police chiefs have urged dating apps to take more responsibility for the safety of users after serial killer Stephen Port was found guilty of murdering four young men and sexually abusing a string of others.

The chef, 41, below, lured victims to his Barking flat through web dating services, knocking them unconscious with date rape drug GHB so he could live out his twisted sexual fantasies.

He will be sentenced at the Old Bailey for his crimes on Friday.

Met Police officers are under fire for their handling of the investigation, failing to spot there was a serial killer on the loose until Port murdered his fourth victim in September 2015.

Chief Constable Jane Sawyers, who leads on LGBT issues for the National Police Chiefs Council, today said dating apps need to do more to protect users from predators such as Port.

She told the BBC: “They could do more to prevent the offences in the first place.”

Ms Sawyers said apps such as Grindr and Tinder could urge users to “get to know the person, not the profile” and warn of the dangers of fake accounts.
