A student is lucky to be alive after being slashed across the neck with a knife after refusing to hand his rucksack to two muggers.

The victim, a 30-year old man from Spain, was attacked by the pair in Willesden Green and was stabbed when he stood up to the robbers.

A struggle ensued after the confrontation outside a block of flats in Willesden Lane at 12.35am yesterday and the man was slashed with a knife across the neck causing a serious injury.

The student, who is studying English in London, was rushed to hospital and police say only the quick response of officers and paramedics in dealing with the wound prevented much more serious injury or worse.

The victim is now said to be in a stable condition in hospital but doctors fear he may have suffered a life changing injury from his wound.

Detectives from Brent CID are leading the investigation into the attack and appealed for witnesses today.

Police said two boys, aged 15 and 17, were arrested early today. They were being questioned at a north London police station on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

Detective Constable Fiona Davidson of Brent CID said: “This was a shockingly violent attack on a man who was simply attempting to prevent the robbery of his bag.

“I would urge anyone who saw what happened, or who has information about those responsible, to make contact with police.”

Anyone with information can call officers on 020 8733 3709 or speak with Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
