A millionaire Qatari businessman has been charged with killing a pedestrian in a Rolls Royce crash near to Buckingham Palace.

Hassan Nasser Al-Thani, 41, is accused of causing the death of 66-year-old Charles Roberts while driving a purple £250,000 Rolls Royce Wraith around Hyde Park Corner.

Mr Roberts, from Harpenden in Hertfordshire, died at the scene of the 3am crash in Duke of Wellington Place, while Al-Thani stopped and was questioned by police.

The businessman has now been charged with causing death by careless driving, and is due to appear at court on Monday.

It is said he was driving “without due care and attention and reasonable consideration for other persons using the road” when his car hit Mr Roberts on August 22, 2019.

Following the crash, Al-Thani confirmed he had been involved in the incident and a friend said he was “devastated” at the death of Mr Roberts.

The Qatar-registered Wraith was left with a large crack on the windscreen in the aftermath of the crash.

Al-Thani, who has given the address of a luxury apartment overlooking Hyde Park to the authorities, is due to appear at Westminster magistrates court on Monday morning.

He has not yet entered a plea to the single charge of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.
