A police probe has been launched after a fatal flat fire in west London.

Scotland Yard is treating the blaze as "suspicious" after an adult's body was found.

Officers are working to identify the victim but said their gender has not yet been confirmed.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters tackled the blaze in a block of flats in Appleford Road in Ladbroke Grove after the London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called at around 2.30pm on Sunday.

The first floor of a maisonette on the ground and first floors of the building was destroyed by fire and a person was found dead at the scene by fire crews wearing breathing apparatus.

The blaze was brought under control by 3.40pm and the Metropolitan Police and LFB are investigating its cause.

Police said the flat has been searched and emergency services are satisfied there are no other casualties.

No arrests have been made.
