A police officer has been left with a fractured eye socket after an "unprovoked" attack as he helped an elderly man and his grandson.

Three officers were targeted after being called to help an elderly bus passenger who collapsed while travelling through Harrow on Monday.

Scotland Yard said the alleged attacker assaulted the sergeant and two constables, kicking and punching them "without provocation".

The three officers were able to arrest the 36-year-old man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assault on police officers.

He remains in custody at a west London police station.

Chief Inspector Alison Darke, from Harrow Police, said no officer should be the victim of such an attack.

She said: "Whilst helping an elderly man and his grandson three of our officers were subjected to a vicious and unprovoked attack which has resulted in one of them being hospitalised overnight.

"Policing is by its very nature unpredictable - however no officer should be subject to such a violent attack."
