Police have released CCTV images of a mentally ill man who was seen in an east London shopping centre after he absconded from hospital.

Jason Pereira, 32, was captured on CCTV wandering through Westfield, Stratford, yesterday at around 3pm.

He went missing from the John Howard Centre, Kenworth Road, Hackney, during a period of escorted leave.

Police are warning the public to not approach Mr Pereira, who suffers from schizophrenia.

He is described as a stocky Asian man, with dark hair and around 6ft 1ins tall.

A police statement said he was last seen wearing a red top over a blue shirt, black trousers and lime green trainers with a pink tick.

It is possible he may be travelling to East Ham where his family live.

Anyone with information can call police on 101.
