A “disgusted” police chief slammed “pathetic louts” who spat at a police car and let the tyres down as officers battled to save a dying crash victim.

Father-of-one Adam Egan, 24, died on Saturday after his scrambler bike smashed into a wall in Fazakerley, Liverpool, last Tuesday.

He had been critically ill in hospital since the collision in Longmoor Lane, police said.

Merseyside Police chief Andy Cooke revealed bystanders let down the tyres on a police car and spat.

A tweet posted by a Merseyside police account on the day of the crash read: “Longmoor Lane has now been reopened, thank you for your patience and understanding whilst we dealt with the incident.

“Special mention to people who decided to let tyres down on the police vehicles and spat over the door handles while we dealt with the incident.”

Chief Constable Cooke shared the message and added: “Dealing with a seriously injured male. Protecting the public. And then this. Proud of my Officers. Disgusted by the pathetic louts who did this.”

After the initial tweet was deleted he shared it again and said: “This was the tweet I was referring to. I don't know why it was deleted. It's important that the vast majority of Merseyside's law abiding public who support the police understand the challenges my Officers face when they are helping others and doing their job.”

On Monday, Det Insp Paul Speight suggested Mr Egan may have been chased shortly before the smash.

He said: "We are investigating the possibility that Mr Egan was being chased shortly before the incident and are very keen to hear from anyone who might have information that could help our inquiries.

"If you noticed anything suspicious, or any vehicles being driven at speed in the area at the time of the incident, please contact police as that information could prove vital.

"Also, if you have any CCTV or dashcam footage taken in the Longmoor Lane area before or after 4.40pm on Tuesday 27 March, that footage could be significant and we would ask you to contact police."

Anyone with information on the collision should contact Matrix Roads Policing on 0151 777 5747, or Merseyside Police social media desk via Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook Merseyside Police CC.

Or call 101 quoting incident reference 18200065123 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
