A man is fighting for life in hospital after he was restrained by police officers investigating an assault in north London.

Police were called to reports of a loud disturbance and a man being assaulted at an address in Waldegrave Road, Haringey at around 7.30pm on Thursday.

They found a 44-year-old man who was “agitated and in a state of distress” at the scene.

Scotland Yard said the officers restrained the man and treated him at the scene. They also called the London Ambulance Service.

Before the paramedics arrived, the man’s condition worsened, the force said.

The 44-year-old man was taken to a north London hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

The man who called the police to the scene did not require hospital treatment.

Detective Chief Superintendent Treena Fleming, in charge of policing for Enfield and Haringey, said the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.

“It is only right that all of the facts are reviewed, and we take the necessary amount of time to assess their findings,” she said.

“I would therefore respectfully ask that our residents and communities avoid any further speculation on the incident until we understand the full circumstances of what happened.”

A referral has also been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and no arrests have been made.

Detective Chief Superintendent Fleming added: “My thoughts and those of my officers are with the man and his family at this difficult time as he continues to receive medical treatment.

“My officers were responding to a call for urgent assistance by a member of the public who was extremely concerned for their safety. They were met by a man who was clearly distressed and acting in a way that caused great concern to those in attendance. They provided first aid when his condition deteriorated.

“My officers are being supported and are fully assisting with information to understand the full circumstances of the incident.”
