This is the first picture of Muhaydin Mire, who was in court today accused of a frenzied knife attack on a stranger at Leytonstone Tube station.

The 29-year-old was in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court charged with attempted murder.

A man, 56, suffered serious injuries during the incident on Saturday night.

The victim, referred to in court as Male A, was allegedly attacked from behind and slashed in the throat in front of terrified onlookers at about 7pm.

Mire is accused of punching the victim to the ground and repeatedly kicking him before taking hold of his head and cutting a 12 centimetre wound in his neck.

The victim was in surgery for five hours after the attack.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the knifeman declared “this is for Syria” during the incident, much of which was filmed by bystanders with mobile phones.

Mire was Tasered three times by police before being arrested.

He was remanded in custody and will next appear at the Old Bailey on Friday.
