An Olympic rowing hopeful was cleared today of battering a Canary Wharf lawyer in a Mayfair club.

The alleged victim, Edward Dyson, an associate and commercial law specialist with Clifford Chance, was accused in court of exaggerating his injuries so he could make a compensation claim.

Sean Corrigall, 23, had been accused of hitting him four times on the dance floor at Mahiki, a favourite of Prince Harry, Kate Moss, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Mr Dyson, 28, claimed six-foot eight inches tall Corrigall, who rows with the prestigious Molesey club, had appeared “out of nowhere” and caused a whiplash-type injury.

This had allegedly worsened his tinnitus - persistent ringing in the ears he said he had suffered since being punched in a separate nightclub incident eight years ago.

But today Hammersmith magistrates decided there wasn’t enough evidence to prove the assault took place and found Mr Corrigall not guilty.

During the trial the court heard Corrigall, who hopes to break in the GB rowing squad before the 2016 Rio Olympics, was enjoying his first ever trip to a nightclub when trouble started in March this year.

Mr Dyson said there had been an argument as he tried to get past Mr Corrigall’s group, and that after he went to the toilet someone threw a drink over his back.

However Corrigall said it was Mr Dyson who barged into him and his friends and, when he confronted him, Mr Dyson became aggressive and tried to bite him on the nose.

Finding Corrigall not guilty of assault, Magistrate Don Kennedy referring to medical evidence which supported the rower’s version of events.

Outside court Corrigall, of Sutton Green, Surrey,  said: “I’m glad it’s over. Now I will go back to training hard.”

He had won gold at the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships, the Metropolitan and Marlow Regattas and the Gold Cup for the 2,000 metres at Henley Regatta.
