Police discovered a headless corpse in a fish tank at the home of a missing San Francisco man, sparking fears among concerned neighbours.

Brian Egg had not been seen near his home in Clara Street since earlier in the summer, resident Scott Free told local newspaper the San Francisco Chronicle.

On August 15, officers searched the house and discovered human remains in a fish tank inside the dilapidated house after smelling “suspicious” odours including cleaning products coming from inside.

Sources told the San Francisco Chronicle that the body was missing its head and hands.

Neighbours had grown concerned over the 65-year-old ex-bartender's safety after spotting water gushing from his home before a van from biohazard clean-up firm Aftermath Services appeared outside, the Guardian reported.

Mr Free said the appearance of the vehicle prompted him to call 911 for a third time.

Police had also received reports that Mr Egg was missing from his family.

Following the grisly discovery, Mr Free said: “In my opinion, it can’t be anyone else but him. We can only imagine what has gone on in that house.”

Neighbours are planning to hold a vigil to mark Mr Egg’s 66th birthday on September 11, the Guardian reported.

Robert McCaffrey, 52, and Lance Silva, 39, were arrested over charges of homicide, fraud, theft, identity theft and abuse of the elderly. The charges were later dropped.

Silva is being held in Alameda County Jail over a probation violation, San Francisco Police said.

Officers have called for any businesses who have spoken to anyone claiming to be Mr Egg or anyone who has assisted with any financial transaction relating to Mr Egg or his home to come forward.

Anyone with information should call San Francisco Police anonymously on 415-575-4444 or text-a-tip to TIP411 with SFPD at the start of the message.
