A 30-year-old man who was stabbed to death near a Tube station was on his way to work in the first week of a “dream job” as a lecturer, it emerged today.

Daniel Young was walking through Kendor Gardens, near Morden Tube station, on Tuesday morning when he was fatally stabbed.

Friends today paid tribute to keen mountain climber Mr Young, who had previously worked as general manager at the Antoinette hotel in Wimbledon.

One friend said: “He was just the loveliest guy. He was about to start work as an assistant lecturer.

“He was so excited, it was his dream job.”

Mr Young was originally from Torquay, Devon, but later moved to London and had been living near the edge of the park for three years.

He was on his way to work at his new job as a teaching fellow at Coventry University’s London Campus on Tuesday morning, but was stabbed just 10 minutes after leaving his home.

One of his housemates said: “He was a wonderful guy and very fit he was always at the gym.

“He was so looking forward to his new job it's a tragedy. He was the best person you could meet.”

Dr Janet Hannah, chief executive officer of Coventry University London Campus, said the university was saddened to hear of Mr Young's death.

She said: "Daniel was at the start of what would undoubtedly have been a very successful academic career. It is a tragedy that he never got the opportunity to fulfil his potential.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends."

A police source said: “He [Daniel] was totally innocent in this. He went to work suited and booted and this happened.

"He had done nothing.”

The 26-year-old man arrested on suspicion of wasting police time, and subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder, has been bailed to return to a south London police station on a date in early March pending further enquiries.

Anyone with any information should call the incident room on 0208 721 4961 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
