Police believe this is the moment an opportunist thief reaches into a woman’s handbag in a supermarket aisle and pulls out her purse while she stands just inches away.

CCTV footage of the alleged theft in north London was released by Scotland Yard today in the hope of tracking down the man on camera.

Detectives believe it happened on July 31 at 3pm as the victim shopped in the meat aisle of a shop in Ballards Lane, Finchley.

The alleged purse snatcher, who is carrying a shopping basket, appears to spot the open bag as the woman pushes her trolley past him.

Seconds later the woman, 60, leaves her trolley unattended for a few seconds. He appears to touch the bag for a moment, seconds before she returns and pushes the trolley off.

Police said she did not realise she had been robbed of the wallet, containing cash and cards, until she got to the till and was unable to pay for her shopping.

“Shoppers are reminded that they should not leave their bags open and unattended when shopping,” a police spokesman said.

Scotland Yard described the man as stocky, bald and black, aged 40 to 50. He was wearing a dark jacket and dark trousers.

Anyone who recognises him is asked to call 101 and quote reference number 187323, or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
