A man has been arrested after a British former soldier was stabbed to death in the Caribbean.

Police in Barbados said an unnamed man was held on Tuesday in relation to the death of Brian Mulligan, 28, who was knifed in the chest in the early hours of Sunday following an "altercation".

Inspector David Welch with the Royal Barbados Police Force said: "A man is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation in relation to the unnatural death of Brian Mulligan. This man was held on Tuesday June 17, 2014."

Mr Mulligan is reportedly a father-of-two from London who served in the army for eight years until 2012, including a spell in Iraq.

After leaving the military he became an engineer and set off to work on the Caribbean island around two months ago, according to friends.

Police said he was stabbed in the chest with a weapon believed to be a knife at about 5.30am at Dover, Christ Church, in the south-west of the island.

In April Mr Mulligan, wrote on what appears to be his Facebook page: "Good bye GB hello Barbados - feeling excited."

Friends said he was a family man who was loving life on the island.
