A man has been charged with theft after comedian Eddie Izzard’s pink beret was snatched during a pro-EU rally in central London.

The marathon-running comic and activist joined thousands of demonstrators on the March for Europe in Whitehall yesterday.

And he gave chase in high heels after a man allegedly swiped his hat, retrieving the eye-catching headwear with the help of police.

David Czerwonko, 26, of Clitherow Road, Brentford has now been charged with theft.

He has been bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on September 19.

The BBC reported that Izzard’s beret has now been taken away by police as evidence.

Campaigners on the demonstration marched from Hyde Park and through Whitehall to the Houses of Parliament, where a debate on whether a second EU referendum should take place will be held on Monday.

Simultaneous protests rallying support for keeping close economic, cultural and social links to Europe took place in Edinburgh, Birmingham, Oxford, and Cambridge.
