A 33-year-old man has been charged after he was arrested at a King's Cross hotel in an alleged dispute over a bill.

Police said they arrested a man in the early hours of May 28 at the Great Northern Hotel and charged him with making off without payment.

He was named as Alexander Christopher Wood, of Southend-on-Sea.

Wood was released on bail and is due to appear at Highbury Magistrates Court on June 26.

Alexander Wood approached the Standard to say he denies the charge of making off without payment. He says the room was booked for him at The Great Northern Hotel by his employer and he signed his own name when checking in at the hotel with a credit card, not that of the Duke of Marlborough.

He says he was dining at the hotel restaurant and that contrary an earlier report, the only figure under dispute for the meal is £145.60. Mr Wood says he did not stay at the hotel or try to leave the hotel without paying, but there was an argument relating to ID documents.
