Specialist police have arrested a man in connection with a firearms offence after officers fired ammunition to stop a car on a busy road this afternoon.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service's Trident Gang Crime Command carried out the "hard stop" on a car on the A27 in Lewes, Sussex.

Detectives and armed officers from the specialist firearms command stopped the car at around 3.30pm.

They said officers did not fire any shots during the incident, but that safer Hatton rounds - designed to breach doors or burst tyres - where discharged to stop the car.

There were no reports of any injuries, police said.

A man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

The Trident Gang Crime Command was launched last year to pursue gangs and gang members across London.
