The man accused of the Leytonstone tube attacks made a short appearance by videolink at the Old Bailey this afternoon.

Muhayadin Mire, 29 of Leytonstone, is currently being held at a maximum security prison but faces assessment under the Mental Health Act.

Mr Justice Sweeney ordered that he enter a plea to the charge of attempted murder at the next hearing on March 7 next year.

He also set a provisional trial date of May 31.

Mire is accused of attacking Tube passengers at 7pm on Saturday evening before he was surrounded by police officers who fired three tasers at him before he could be arrested.

One victim, known only as Male A suffered a 12 centimetre slash to his throat which required five hours of surgery.

Mire was then examined by medical practitioners who found him not fit to continue to be interviewed and a local mental health trust was consulted.

At a previous hearing prosecutor David Cawthorne said the attack was "violent, sustained and unprovoked."

Male A had been "making his way through the station," said the prosecutor.

"Male A was punched, knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked on the ground.

A police officer fired his taser gun twice and a third taser shot finally brought him to the ground and he was arrested.”

There was no application for bail.
