A man has been arrested after a motorist was killed by a lorry as he got out of his car on the hard shoulder of the M25 after crashing into the central reservation.

Detectives believe the male victim hit the reservation between junctions 29 and 28, near Brentwood, and pulled over to inspect the damage when he was hit.

The victim, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 9pm on Thursday night.

The HGV driver is thought to have stopped briefly but drove away before emergency services arrived. Police were appealing for the driver to come forward.

Yesterday, police arrested a man, aged in his 20s, on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He has been bailed until early July.

Police said the victim’s next of kin have been informed but formal identification is yet to take place.

A post-mortem examination is underway at Queen’s Hospital in Romford.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Roads and Transport police on 0208 597 4874.
