A lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs after knocking down a pedestrian in south London.

The driver, whose age was not released by police, was held after the collision on Goat Road in Mitcham at 4.20pm today.

He was being quizzed by police at a west London police station this evening, Scotland Yard said.

The pedestrian was taken to a west London hospital by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service to be treated for serious injuries.

His condition was described by police tonight as "not life-threatening".

The road was closed at the junction with London Road while police investigated but has since reopened, Transport for London said.
