Five people arrested in connection with the murders of two men found fatally wounded in a car have been released on bail, Scotland Yard said.

Aaron Carriere, 21, and Josiah Manful, 20, were both repeatedly stabbed after their black Ford Fiesta was stopped in Montague Road, Leytonstone, north east London, in the early hours of Saturday March 1.

A gang of hooded attackers surrounded the car, leaving Mr Carriere with fatal knife wounds to his neck and Mr Manful with stab wounds to the chest.

Detectives are still trying to establish the motive for the double murder, and why the Fiesta stopped in Montague Road, as they appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Another four cars were believed to be nearby at the time of the attack and police say they are keen to identify the vehicles and their occupants.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Attewell said: "One week on from the double murder we are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the attack or the events leading up to the murders.

"We have made a number of arrests but we still require the help and assistance of those in the local community who have any knowledge as to why Aaron and Josiah were brutally targeted.

"Someone knows the reason why these two young men were murdered and I am urging those who hold the information not to remain silent but to come forward.

"Extensive enquires into the events of that day continue and we now know that there were four other vehicles in and around Montague Road at the time of the murders.

"I am appealing for the occupants of those vehicles to come forward and assist us with our investigation."

Five men arrested in connection with the murders have been released on bail, police said.

Another five men, aged 18 to 22, were arrested on suspicion of murder on Wednesday while a 46-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They have been bailed pending further inquiries, police said.

Post-mortem examinations found the cause of death for Mr Carriere was given as stab wounds to the neck while the cause of death for Mr Manful was given as shock and haemorrhaging, and stab wounds to the chest.

The Evening Standard quoted an online tribute from Mr Manful's sister Claudia that said: "I'll never wish death on anyone, but I hope the people that took Aaron and Josiah's lives conscience eats away at them."

An incident room has opened in Barking, north London, under Mr Attewell from the Homicide and Major Crime Command (HMCC).
