Three police officers were injured and four teenagers have been arrested after a “terrifying brawl” broke out between school children in south east London.

A female officer suffered a broken wrist, a male officer dislocated his shoulder and another was treated for a gash to his arm after fighting broke out during school’s lunch break in Burnt Ash lane, Lewisham.

Nearby shops reportedly “went into lockdown” as a local café had its windows smashed during the rampage.

A 50-year-old woman also suffered facial injuries when violent scenes, reportedly involving around 50 teenagers, erupted outside an Iceland store just before 12.30pm on Friday.

She remains in hospital but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

One passerby, who gave her name as Nicola, described scored of police cars on the residential road as officers worked to break-up the fight.

She said: “I came out of the gym and there were loads of police vans.

“A woman was on the floor and I heard she had been beaten up.

“Other people were saying Iceland had had to lock its doors to prevent trouble and a café down the road had its windows smashed.

“It was very scary, you don’t expect that in the middle of the day. There must have been around 50 kids hanging around.”

Three boys - aged 16, 15,14 - and a 14-year-old girl were arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage to a nearby café, Scotland Yard said.

A second girl, whose age is unknown, was also arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage and further arrested on suspicion of GBH.

A Met Police spokesman said: “All those arrested were taken into custody at a south London police station and have since been released on bail until dates in late March pending further enquiries.

“Enquiries by Lewisham Borough officers into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.”
