Tory councillor Brian Coleman has been charged with “assault by beating” after allegedly attacking a café owner.

The Barnet councillor, 51, who spent four years running the London fire brigade for Boris Johnson, is accused of assaulting Helen Michael in North Finchley last month.

He is due to appear at Hendon magistrates’ court on November 5, where he will also face a charge of “driving a mechanically propelled vehicle on a public place without reasonable consideration”.

The former London Assembly member, who lost his seat in May following a campaign against him by activists including Ms Michael, 49, is alleged to have attacked her after she filmed him parking in a loading bay.

He then allegedly sped away with the café owner inside the car before crashing into a truck.
