Four “career criminals” who pumped train station cash machines with gas before blowing them up in a series of raids have been jailed for a total of 42 years.

Andrew Bransome, 40, of Wallington, 53-year-old Malcolm Jervis, of Romford, Louis Golding, 45, of Woodford Green, and 44-year-old Martyn Williamson, of Coulsdon, struck on 14 occasions at nine stations across London, Surrey and Essex in a two-year spree.

One station was targeted four times over the period from March 2014 to last May while another was raided twice in as many days.

The men pumped various inflammable gases into ATMs via the cash dispensing slot before using petrol to ignite the fumes. The subsequent blast allowed them to grab cash contained inside the machines.

Aftermath: More than £150,000 was stolen as a result of the raids

More than £150,000 was stolen as a result of the raids while the cost of damage to buildings and cash machines was around £50,000.

Detectives said it was fortunate no one was seriously injured or even killed during the attacks.

The gang were under surveillance by British Transport Police for several months before they were arrested last May following a bungled attempt to blow up a machine at Weybridge station in Surrey.

Bransome, Jervis and Golding were arrested whilst travelling in convoy on the A3 while Williamson was held at his home later the same morning.

Jervis received 16 years

They also faced counts of conspiracy to cause explosions likely to endanger life or cause serious injury to property.

Bransome, Golding and Williamson pleaded guilty to both counts while Jervis admitted conspiracy to burgle and was convicted of conspiracy to cause explosions by a jury at Blackfriars Crown Court.

Bransome was jailed for 12 years, Golding for 10 years and eight months, Jervis for 16 years and Williamson was sentenced for four years at the same court on Friday.

Investigating officer DC Gary Beckwith said: “In short this was serious organised criminality committed by professional career criminals over a lengthy period which put the public at serious risk of death or injury which is reflected by the sentences handed down by the judge.”
