A war against illegal ice cream vans on the South Bank is being taken to the High Court.

Lambeth council is seeking injunctions against sellers Elma Sanli and Ndue Meli who operate in a prohibited area of 22 streets including the Cut and Coin Street.

Street trading around the South Bank is closely regulated to protect tourists from being ripped off or sold potentially harmful “death burger” food.

The claims say both defendants had repeatedly taken part in itinerant ice cream trading in breach of the London Local Authorities Act. The injunction against Ms Sanli says she was aware of the restrictions because of “multiple altercations” with the council.

The council said it was going to the High Court because the traders had ignored all efforts to stop them trading. Ms Sanli was convicted of unlawful street trading in January and she has been issued with fines at least six times since 2009; 23 fixed penalty notices have been issued against “individuals associated with Ms Sanli”.

Last week the council crushed an unlicensed ice cream van seized on Westminster Bridge in May last year.

Jack Hopkins, Lambeth council’s cabinet member for public protection, said: “We’re determined to do everything in our powers to tackle cowboy traders.”
