A woman broke down today as she told a court how her mother returned home hurt and bloodied after being attacked by rapist Antoni Imiela.

The woman, named as Charlene, was 10 when she saw her mother Shiela Jankowitz enter the family’s south London flat on Christmas Day 1987.

She told the Old Bailey: “I saw my mum standing by the front door in the passageway. There were marks all over her face. There was blood. There was some on her clothes. She was crying and she was speaking to my stepdad’s mum.”

Her stepfather, Erwin, came home and her mother ran to the bathroom. She said her step-grandmother coaxed the woman out and she heard her mother say she had been raped.

It is alleged Mrs Jankowitz, 29, was one of the first victims of serial sex attacker Imiela, who was convicted in March 2004 of raping seven women in a “savage and perverted campaign” in 2001 and 2002.

The jury were told Mrs Jankowitz died six years ago.

Detectives launched a “cold case” review of unsolved rapes and found DNA taken from her matched his, - with a probability that it came from someone else rather than him was “one in a billion”.

Imiela, now 57, denies rape, another serious sexual offence and indecent assault.

He claims any sex was consensual. The trial continues.
