The mother of an innocent student stabbed to death by a rampaging gang told today of her torment on the fifth anniversary of his unsolved murder.

Edvin Johnson, 19, died five years ago this week when he and a friend were set upon by five youths. But despite 15 arrests nobody has been charged.

His mother Genevieve Johnson said: “People say in time your pain will go but I have not experienced that because we have not had any justice.”

Detectives, who are offering a £20,000 reward for information, made a further arrest in the case on Wednesday. The suspect, aged 23, was released on bail after questioning.

Ms Johnson, from New Cross, said: “For the young man who took my son, life continues but I’m still in the same place. I just constantly ask myself why? Every time I pass someone in the street who turns their face, I’m thinking ‘that boy must know something’. I have no answers and that torments me.”

Edvin died in September 2007 after being stabbed in the leg in the stairwell of a tower block on the Crawford Estate in Camberwell.

Police believe the church-going teenager, who was due to start a business studies course at Southampton University, was stabbed out of frustration when the gang were unable to find their intended target.

Mr Johnson told The Voice newspaper of her disgust at the “code of silence” among gang members. “At five years, I just want to remember my son again for all the love he’s given to me,” she said.

Detectives have pledged to protect potential witnesses.
