The estranged husband of a woman found dead in a south-east London flat has been charged with murder.

The body of 31-year-old Sophie Cavanagh, a mother of two, was found on May 20 at a flat in Chatterton Road, Bromley.

Martin Cavanagh, 35, appeared in custody at Bromley Magistrates' Court in south London on Monday.

He was remanded to appear in custody at the Old Bailey on May 30.

The victim's death was initially treated as "unexplained" but Scotland Yard launched a murder probe after initial findings from the post-mortem examination suggested it was "suspicious".

A provisional cause of death was given as compression of the neck.

Cavanagh was arrested on May 24 after handing himself in to police.

Ms Cavanagh’s mother Dawn Larkin said the mother of two doted on her children and was a “wonderful” friend.

She said: “She was my baby, she was an angel. I have lost my baby. She was a wonderful mother and person. Everyone loved her.”
