The prime suspect in the murder of gangster John "Goldfinger" Palmer has been released from bail and will face no further action, police said.

The man, reportedly the relative of the victim, was arrested over the 65-year-old's killing in August after convicted fraudster Palmer was found shot at his home in South Weald, Essex, on June 24.

On Thursday Essex Police confirmed a 44-year-old from Rugby was no longer a suspect in the case.

Following the discovery of Mr Palmer's body, police initially did not treat the death as suspicious, blaming complications from recent surgery.

But a post mortem later found he had died from gunshot wounds to the chest.

Mr Palmer grew rich as the architect of a timeshare empire in Tenerife in the 1980s.

He was jailed in 2001 for fraud after building a multimillion-pound business that cheated thousands of Britons who wanted a holiday home in the sun.

His "Goldfinger" nickname was acquired after the millionaire, said to have had extensive connections to the criminal underworld, was cleared of handling proceeds from the £26 million Brink's-Mat bullion raid at Heathrow in 1983.

Speaking after his death, Mr Palmer's family issued a statement saying: "We are still in shock and trying to come to terms with the enormity of John's death.

"To lose someone you care about and who is a key part of your family so suddenly is traumatic and completely overwhelming."

Essex Police continues to appeal for information to aid their enquiries into the incident on Sandpit Lane in South Weald, thought to have happened some time between 4pm and 6pm on June 24.
