A teenage girl has admitted punching an 87-year-old pensioner in the face on a bus in south London.

The 14-year-old schoolgirl hit Marion Endacott as the pair travelled on the 166 bus along Brighton Road, Croydon.

Ms Endacott had intervened in a row over a bus fare between the girl and a second teenager when she was attacked.

She suffered a black eye after being struck by the first girl and subsequently required hospital treatment.

Her attacker, who was arrested after police released CCTV footage of the assault, admitted a charge of common assault at Croydon Crown Court today.

She is due to return to court for a pre-sentence hearing in January, police said.

Commenting on the assault on October 16 this year, Sergeant Arran Hillier, of the Croydon Safer Transport Team, said: “This was an unprovoked attack on an old lady just trying to get home."
