An ex-professional American Football player has been shot and killed after a road traffic accident in the US.

Will Smith, who used to play for the New Orleans Saints, died “of multiple gunshot wounds” following the incident in New Orleans on Sunday, city coroner Jeffrey Rouse said.

The father-of-three, who played in defence, was 34 years old.

He is said to have been shot after a confrontation with another driver following a collision.

His wife Racquel was also shot and taken to hospital.

In a statement, his family said: "On behalf of the Smith family, we are thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers. We ask that you continue to respect the family's privacy as they grieve the loss of a devoted husband, father and friend."

A spokesman for his former team said his death was a “senseless and tragic loss”.
