A Metropolitan Police officer who was involved in a fatal collision with a motorbike rider when they drove through a red light on their way to an emergency call is under criminal investigation.

The officer was in a marked police vehicle at around 3pm on October 12 when they collided with 26-year-old Cristopher de Carvalho Guedes in Enfield, north London.

The vehicle, which had its lights and sirens on, drove through a red light on Southbury Road and hit Mr Guedes, who was turning right on his bike.

Mr de Carvalho Guedes, a Brazilian national, died in hospital on October 13.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) began its investigation after a referral from the Met Police on the day of the incident.

The watchdog has reviewed police body worn video and dash cam footage and said it will also be speaking to another officer who was involved.

As part of its investigation, the IOPC said it will also be securing video footage from buses in the area, trying to look at CCTV and finding witnesses.

The officer is under criminal investigation for potential offences of causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving while also being investigated for potential gross misconduct.

Charmaine Arbouin, IOPC regional director, said: "This is a tragic incident where a young man has lost his life and our thoughts and sympathies are with Mr Guedes' family and friends both here and in Brazil.

"We have spoken with Mr Guedes' family to explain our role and we will keep them updated as our investigation progresses.

"While our investigation is in its early stages, we have found an indication that a criminal offence may have been committed.

"We will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Guedes' death and at the end of our investigation, we will then decide whether to refer the matter to the Crown Prosecution Service for a charging decision and decide whether the officer should face disciplinary proceedings."
