An e-fit has been released of a man who pretended to be a police officer to steal from pensioners.

The man knocked on the door of a house in Stepney Green on April 4 at about 5.45pm and claimed he was a police officer.

He was wearing a navy jumper with the word police on in white letters and said he needed to speak to the occupants about found money.

The two men, both aged in their 80s, allowed the man into the address.

He told them he could install CCTV in some of the rooms and said he needed to see their money.

After handing over cash the man fled the property with the money.

Police said the man is white, aged 45 to 55 years old, 5ft 7ins tall and of very slim build. He had black hair and piercing brown eyes.

Scotland Yard are appealing for anybody who recognises the man to come forward.

A statement said: “Tower Hamlets police would like to remind the public that police officers always carry identification and will show their warrant cards to the public.

“Do not open your door to any unexpected callers if you are suspicious and ask them to wait outside while you check they are who they say they are.”
