Police were today continuing to question a suspect over a series of random knife attacks in north London which have left five people injured, two of them critically.

Scotland Yard said two of three men arrested in connection with the stabbings had been released pending further enquiries. But a third man in his thirties arrested yesterday was still being quizzed today.

He was seized by police hours after a fifth person was stabbed in Edmonton close to where four others were attacked at the weekend. Police denied reports that they had recovered a knife.

The fifth victim, in his thirties, was attacked just yards from a manned police cordon around the scene of the first stabbing in Aberdeen Road.

He remained in hospital today in a critical condition after being stabbed in the chest as he walked with a companion in Fairfield Road at around 5am.

An extensive police cordon was still in place around the scene of the latest attack as residents spoke of their fears of walking alone.

Amy Yueng, 27, with her 15-month-old daughter Sky, said: “Everyone is worried and nervous. We are all watching our backs and feel very vulnerable I have only just moved here and thought it was a safe area ... obviously not.

“I have to go out alone every morning to help my friend on the school run. I have to keep my eyes everywhere. It’s very scary.”

Paul Moran, 41, who owns a garage in Aberdeen Road, said: “It’s worrying everyone and people are on edge.

“I’m not letting my son, who is 14, out of the house. I have stayed in for the last two nights with my family rather than going outside. Police are here constantly but it’s not much comfort.”

Mohamed Ali, 46, a father of four, said: “Four of the stabbings happened within three minutes of my house. My wife is scared and won’t go outside.”

Resident Dayle Best, 54, said the latest victim collapsed outside his front door, and told The Sun: “There’s been a 24-hour police watch in my street from Saturday’s stabbing. It’s terrifying living here.”

Chief Superintendent Helen Millichap, who heads local police, said: “We are potentially looking at just one individual perpetrator. However, until the investigation has developed further and we are in a position to speak with certainty about this, I have a duty to ask the public to remain vigilant."

In a separate incident last night, two men, both aged 20, staggered into a student hall near Wembley stadium for help after being stabbed repeatedly.

Witnesses said one man was stabbed six times and a group of five men were seen running from the scene in Empire Way. The two victims were taken to hospital but their conditions are not life-threatening.
