A man who stabbed his girlfriend in the leg during an argument at his home in south-east London has been jailed.

Derek Rogers, 50, grabbed a knife following a dispute with his partner, aged in her 30s, at his house in Abbey Wood last June.

After angrily stabbing her once in the leg she managed to contact a friend who called the police to Rogers' home.

Police said he tried to pass off the incident as an “accident” but was arrested on suspicion of assault and later charged. His victim was treated in hospital.

Throughout a three-day trial at Woolwich Crown Court, Rogers tried to claim the woman inflicted the injury on herself.

However, he was found guilty by a jury and on March 15 was sentenced to two years behind bars.

DC Gemma Jackson of Greenwich CID, who led the investigation, said: "Domestic abuse destroys lives and anyone can be affected by it. The victim has had to go through the ordeal of reliving the incident in court as Rogers refused to accept his guilt.

"She was extremely courageous and I am pleased the jury were able to see through Rogers’ lies and convict him. Hopefully the victim can now begin to move on with her life."
