A woman was stabbed repeatedly with a broken bottle in front of children at a barbecue party in the garden of a London home.

The victim, in her thirties, was today in a serious but stable condition in hospital with multiple stab wounds following the frenzied attack in Clapham at 5.45pm last night.

Detectives were today hunting a man who entered the £500,000 house, in a crescent of terraced family homes near Clapham Common, attacked the woman and sped away in a silver Peugeot van. It is believed the victim was among the guests at a party for about 20 ten and 11-year-olds to mark the start of the summer holidays.

Neighbours told how she ran through the house into the road outside screaming before collapsing in the road covered in blood.

One described how the laughter and shouts of happy children were shattered by screams.

She said: “I heard the barbecue and it all seemed happy. There were lots of children playing and laughing.

“All of a sudden I heard screams. I thought it was the children playing but as I looked from my window there was a woman running. She was the one screaming.”

Another witness said she had seen the woman lying in the street before paramedics arrived.

She said: “There was blood everywhere. She was just lying there in the middle of the road.”

Delie Bride, 75, a friend of the family who live at the address, said: “I have known them for nine years. They have four [children].

“I am devastated by this. I am just hoping that the family are okay. Thank god the kids were not hurt.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said no arrests had been made and added: “It is believed that the suspect and the victim are known to each other. Enquiries are continuing to trace the man and the vehicle.”
